Sports Massage is a deep tissue massage, but contrary to it's name, you don't have to be sporty to see the benefits.
Sports Massage is reported to reduce muscle soreness and is known to increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage in the area treated. This increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the area which assists muscle repair.
If you're having regular sports massage this can help prevent injury by highlighting areas of tension and/or weakness; prevention is better than cure.
Should a Sports Massage hurt?
A Sports Massage may be deep and intense at times, and whilst there may be mild discomfort, it should not be excessively painful. The aim is for the muscles to relax and if you find yourself clinging to the couch, your muscles will just be getting tighter. It is really important to have a two-way feedback system to provide the most appropriate level of pressure. It's your body and the amount of pressure required is a very individual thing.
