Cupping has ancient origins in both Chinese and Greek medicine. Whilst the basics are the same, modern Dry Cupping is usually carried out with either silicon or plastic cups, although other technologies are available. The idea is to create a small vacuum beneath the cup to lift the skin which leads to decompression of the underlying structures. Traditionally, the vacuum would have been created by using a lit candle inside the cup but we use either plastic cups that use a small pump to create the vacuum or silicon cups which can be compressed before application to create the same effect. Dry cupping should not be confused with wet cupping which is used in some cultures to reportedly remove toxins by making a small incision in the skin before applying the cups.
Normal massage generally compresses the skin and muscles and therefore its use is limited when working close to nerves or bones. One of the many benefits of dry cupping is that it can be used on top of these structures. We often use Dry Cupping in conjunction with active movement during routine Soft Tissue Therapy treatment sessions.
